The Sultanate Brunei is located in Southeast Asia and enjoys one of the highest capita incomes worldwide. The energy-rich economy accounts for a skilled labor force and an extensive transportation network. Its natural resources oil and gas contribute to roughly two-thirds of output and almost all of its exports. Japan represents the main trading partner.
Brunei´s agricultural production comprises rice, vegetables, fruits and livestock in form of chickens, water buffalo, cattle and goats. The sector as a whole accounts only for 0.9% of the total GDP employing slightly less than one-twentieth of the labor force. Given the limited size of the sector, Brunei’s domestic cereals consumption depends almost completely on imports.
Living conditions in Brunei match the highest standards; malnutrition and poverty are not a severe issue for the country which, according to the HDI (2014), scored 0.856 ranking in the category of countries exhibiting a very high human development.
