Background information

Agriculture, mainly based on bananas, has traditionally been the backbone of the Dominican economy but recently governmental efforts promote Dominica as an "ecotourism" destination to attract more tourists and strengthen the service sector.

The agricultural sector employs two-fifths of the total workforce and contributes to one-seventh of the total GDP; the main crops produced are bananas, citrus, mangos, root crops, coconuts and cocoa. High exposures to natural, recurring disasters however threaten productivity and access to food. However, given the scarce production of cereals, the total share of the domestic consumption has to be imported.

Upper middle-income Dominica ranked among the countries with a high level of human development on the HDI (2014) scoring 0.724. However, it shows a relatively high level of unemployment of 23%.
