The former Portuguese colony Macao has been a Special Administrative Region of China since 1997. In the beginning of this century, the locally-controlled casino industry has been opened to foreign competition and henceforward, attracted a lot of foreign investment. The country is therefore highly service-orientated, and its two main industries tourism and gambling are directly related. Being such a small country, Macao is a net importer in general. In terms of economic growth, Macao reports the second highest real GDP growth rate worldwide.
The autonomous territory is located on the southern coast of China. Almost none of the land of Macao is being cultivated. Only 2% of land area is used for agricultural purposes, mainly for growing vegetables. Fishery on the other side signifies an important income source since some fishing is exported to Hong Kong.
With a population of more than 600,000 people in a small area of roughly 30 square kilometers, it is one of the most densely populated regions in the world and totally urbanized. Macao accounts for one of the highest life expectancy rate of around 84 years worldwide. Being a Special Administrative Region of the Peoples Republic of China, no single global indices are being reported for Macao.
